Success at what cost?

In one of the books I am reading right now, the author shares an image that a friend shared with him.

Picture a four-burner stove, he says.  Each burner represents one of the following: friends, family, health, and work.

In order to be successful, you have to turn one off.  To be wildly successful, you have to turn off two.

Discuss.

  1. Hi Jackie! I’m loving reading what you write so thanks for putting it out there!

I like this, it really makes me think. I can’t imagine that being “successful” is any greater than those four things, but I guess it depends on how you define it. . .recognition? fame? wealth? nah. Happiness? now there’s a dealbreaker…hmmmmm.

    • Awww, thanks, Rachel!!

The story made me think too. I mean, obviously the world’s definition of “wild success” is probably vastly different from mine, but it still made me think!

  2. Hmmmm–food for thought. I guess it would depend on what “success” means. I could certainly live without man’s idea of success if I still had the other four things.

    • Right! I think that success can be defined so many different ways. But I know that I’ve definitely seen my health decline while I focused on my novel/work, so I can see where it’s true. Right now I’m trying desperately to learn balance. It’s SO hard for me!

  3. True, but I think that it is important to choose the two that you think are most important. Overall, though I feel that moderation in all of these area’s is the most important.
