Ideas of Reference: The Plot Thickens

Read Sam’s fascinating blog post about paranoid schizophenia’s “ideas of reference.”



You may get rather uncomfortable reading this post.  Sometimes being uncomfortable is bad for you.  Other times, it’s good for you.  Either way, it’s uncomfortable.  It isn’t my hope to offend, to be creepy, to be obsessively ranting of my woes.  It is my hope to open your eyes, to offer hope to those struggling.  

I mentioned in my last post that I would be talking about “ideas of reference” (also known as “ideas of delusion).  Many people struggling with mental illness have ideas of reference, and believe me, it’s not an easy thing to deal with.

On July 3rd, 2010, I read my parents the lyrics of a song I have grown to love.  It is called “A Hard Rain’s A Gonna Fall,” by Bob Dylan.  At this point in my life, I was experiencing ideas of reference in just about anything.  I could see myself symbolically…
